Getting Started with Users and Groups

If you are not using Worksoft single sign-on, Certify administrators can create users and groups within Certify.

If you are using SSO authentication, administrators create users and groups in the Worksoft Portal. For more information, see Adding Users in Worksoft Portal and Adding Groups in Worksoft Portal. Administrators will maintain user and group updates in the Worksoft Portal.

Certify and LDAP Authentication

After logging into Certify, you need to create users. To limit access, create groups with customized permissions and add users to these groups. Certify creates one predefined group named Administrators and one user named admin.

After logging in the first time as a Certify administrator, create yourself as a new user with all permissions. Then, sign out of Certify and sign in using the new user name and password you assigned yourself. Change the password for the admin user to maintain security.

The Users and Groups window is where administrators can do the following:

  • Create users and groups
  • Update users and groups information
  • Reset passwords
  • Enable and disable users
  • Assign permissions

For detailed procedures, see the How To section.

Defining Certify Tasks for Users

Certify administrators create the users and groups within Certify and assign them permissions. Depending on the type of user, administrators can limit the permissions to specific tasks. To assist you, Certify has a set of views that you can select for each type of user:

User

Description

Administrator

Administrators are expected to install Certify, set up users and groups, create applications and versions, and create projects. Administrators have duties on the front end of Certify, and then they leave other functionality to other users. Certify has designed a view especially to address these activities.

Use the Certify view for administrators by selecting View > Administrator in the menu.

Manager

Managers have a broad array of responsibilities that includes assigning work, checking progress, and reassigning resources to areas of critical need, and assessing overall progress toward team goals. Even though these users may do some Worksoft application work, but most of their interactions with Worksoft applications is related to administration, planning, and reporting.

Use the Certify view for managers by selecting View > Manager in the menu.

Business Analyst

Business analysts are regular users of Worksoft applications, but they usually do not test software. These users might spend a few hours each day using Worksoft applications.

Business analysts may use their expertise to create tests, while other groups may be responsible for managing tests, running regression suites against nightly builds, forwarding builds to quality engineers, and preparing patch releases.

Use the Certify view for business analysts by selecting View > Business Analyst in the menu.

Quality Engineer

Quality engineer personnel are the most frequent users of Worksoft applications. Using Worksoft applications is a primary function of these users’ daily work.

Quality engineers use most of the functionality available in Worksoft products, including creating and importing application maps, creating and executing processes, and creating and viewing reports.

Use the Certify view for quality engineers by selecting View > Quality Engineer in the menu.
