Creating Attributes
Attributes are user-defined fields and values that let you extend the definition of Certify components. You can categorize, collect, sort, and extract data. You can associate the new attribute with a requirement, process, layout, or result.
To create an attribute:
- In the Navigation pane, click Extensions.
The Extensions window opens.
- In the Navigation tree, expand the Attributes folder.
The Attributes folder expands to display Process, Requirement, and Result folders.
- Right-click on one of the folders and select New Attribute.
The New Attribute dialog opens.

Enter information into the following fields:
Option
Description
Name
Enter a unique name for the attribute.
Attribute names can have a maximum of 255 characters, and they can include numbers and special characters.
Description
Enter a description that identifies the attribute. Descriptions can have a maximum of 256 characters, and they can include numbers and special characters.
Data Type
From the drop-down list, select one of the following types of data to be used in the attribute:
- Text
- Number
- Date
Control Type
From the drop-down list, select the control type.
The Control Type selections change according to your Data Type selection.
Edit Values
If active, click this button to add or edit values for the attribute.

Default Value
A default value only accepts the designated format for the data type and control type selected. Default values can have a maximum of 2,000 characters.
For multi-value attributes, select the value (or values) that should appear as the default. For a date input, select the default date from the DatePicker.
When saving the attribute, the default value and input type are verified to ensure that they are valid.

Select one or more of the following options:
Option
Description
Required
If this attribute should be required, select this option.
Required attributes appear with an asterisk to the right of the attribute name in the Attributes tabs and dialogs.
Critical
If this attribute is critical enough to monitor or detect when it changes, then select this option.
Read Only
This option allows a Certify administrator the ability to create attributes whose values can only be modified by a user that is a member of the pre-defined Administrators group.
Clear Value on Copy/Paste
If you want to clear the value when a user selects to copy or paste this value, select this option.
- Click OK.
The attribute is saved.
To edit an attribute:
In the Attributes Summary pane, right-click on an attribute and select Edit.
The Edit Attribute dialog opens, and you can edit your attribute.
